 Joanna Spencer, DVM

Originally from Toronto, Canada, I graduated with honors from the University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine in 1996. Over the past 29 years, I have devoted myr career to small animal medicine in a wide range of settings—general dog and cat practices, feline-only clinics, non-profit and rescue organizations, high-quality high-volume spay/neuter (HQHVSN) programs, TNR efforts, and private practice ownership. My focus has been on wellness care, surgery, dentistry, ultrasound, hospice/palliative care, and community-based outreach.

I've always believed that life can be challenging — but it’s better with pets. The chapters of our lives are often measured by the animals who’ve walked beside us. I've known the comfort of pets in hard times, and the joy they bring in everyday moments. That bond was nurtured early by my mum, who passed on her deep love for animals to me.

My journey to Michigan’s Upper Peninsula began through a love of the wild and a sense of adventure in remote, snowy places. What started with camping trips and a ski-in cabin turned into something much deeper. When my husband and I found our place here, we knew it was meant to be. Georgia may have been where we lived, but the U.P. immediately felt like home.

That feeling is rooted in my family’s history too. My great-grandfather, an inventor of a diamond drilling compass, moved from New Zealand to Iron River to work as a drilling foreman for the Longyear Diamond Drilling Company. My grandmother was born there and later married my grandfather, a Canadian geologist.

For me, settling here has felt like coming full circle. It’s an honor to now call this place home—and to care for the animals and people who make this community so special. I am passionate about exploring ways to bring veterinary access to care and reduce economic euthanasia to the region, and am committed to helping families and pets stay together. I have a love for wildlife, and have been working on educating and exploring training opportunities to advance my wildlife treatment skills, with the goal of extending care to the gifts nature has provided us here.
